If you hold SOL, there is nothing you need to do for today's upgrade. The only people who will tell you otherwise are trying to steal from you. Solana's Alpenglow upgrade is due to activate on October 21, at around 13:00 to 15:00 UTC depending on the source. It changes how the network's validators agree on transactions and aims to confirm them in about 150 milliseconds. Per the Solana Foundation's summary, ordinary holders don't need to update a wallet, move coins or sign anything.

Key facts

  • Who: Solana's validators, the computers that run the network; ordinary holders are not asked to act
  • What: The Alpenglow upgrade changes how transactions are confirmed, aiming for about 150 milliseconds
  • When: Due to activate on October 21, 2026, at around 13:00 to 15:00 UTC

What changes

Alpenglow replaces the way Solana's validators vote on and finalize blocks. The target is to make transactions final in about 150 milliseconds, far faster than today. That figure is a design goal, not yet a measured result on the live network. The validators also move their voting off the main chain, so block explorers will show fewer transactions afterwards. That's an accounting change, not a drop in real use.

Is anything at risk?

The work falls on validators. They need updated software and a new key, and on October 20 about 151 validators holding roughly 20% of staked SOL were flagged as not ready. That could mean a bumpy start for the network, but it doesn't touch the coins in your wallet. Your SOL and tokens stay where they are, and wallets and apps keep working as before.

The scam to ignore

  • Expect messages saying you must "migrate", "upgrade" or "verify" your SOL for Alpenglow. Solana observers have already warned holders to ignore impersonators asking them to sign transactions.
  • Signing a transaction or connecting your wallet to a fake site can give a drainer permission to empty it. Our guide to how approval scams work shows what that signature really does.
  • No real upgrade step needs your recovery phrase, a deposit or a signature. If you get one, close it.
  • Not sure? Run the message through our 2-minute scam check.

One rule covers the whole upgrade: if anything asks you to sign, connect or "migrate" for Alpenglow, close it. Doing nothing is the right move today.
